Amy and Kyle Catholic Photography

Photography; D.C., Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Connecticut

Amy and Kyle Ambrose’s desire for a distinctively Catholic wedding vendor experience began with their own wedding planning, as they spent hours searching online for a photographer who shared their faith and would bring added knowledge and depth to their Mass images.

Several years, photography courses, and newborn shoots with their own daughter later, friends began asking Amy and Kyle to shoot their families and weddings. With a deep understanding and reverence for couples’ desire to find authentically Catholic vendors, Amy and Kyle strive to provide their couples with the sense of mission, prayer, and skill they themselves hoped to find—answering a call and meeting a need.

Love means: Choosing to lay down your life for another.

We root for: Go Yankees!

Favorite part of working on weddings: Getting to know our couples and walk with them during their engagement. For most of our weddings, we feel like we are showing up to celebrate old friends! It's an indescribable honor to stand at the side of the bride and groom throughout their wedding day. We love being able to pray for, and serve, them and their families, and to help keep the focus on the most important thing throughout the day—the reception of the sacrament.

Boda Maestra

Wedding Coordination; Washington, D.C. Metro Area

Maestra, in Spanish, means masterpiece, and that’s just what Esme Krahn wants your wedding--boda--to be. Esme was working full-time, coordinating weddings on the side, in Mexico when she first met a man named Joe, from Virginia, through online dating. Their initial conversations bloomed into a long-distance, cross-continental relationship that culminated in a Washington, D.C. proposal.

A lifelong Catholic and a lover of the Church and of her native Hispanic culture, Esme channeled her college event coordination experience into wedding planning the first few times she assisted with Hispanic Catholic weddings, and was awakened to a God-given gift.

Now residing stateside with her husband, Esme earned her wedding planning certification through Weddings Beautiful Worldwide and transitioned her career into full-time wedding coordination and design. She’s served the D.C. Metro area through BodaMaestra, offering full and partial wedding planning or management plans, for over a decade.

From Esme: I like to be there for my clients. At the outset of each coordination process, I hold discovery meetings where I find out what's truly important to the bride and groom. No couple is alike, so I take time to find out what each one’s main priorities are, what fears are hunting them and the overall feel they are looking for on their wedding day.

My couples and I are a team where everyone has responsibilities and decisions to make. Our planning meetings are productive and a stress reliever--by the time the wedding day rolls around, the only thing they have to worry about is each other! My couples can trust me 100% that I will troubleshoot any day-of issues and will execute their plans as agreed. Each day is accompanied with a prayer for their life as a couple and for our team's abilities to shine and perform flawlessly.

Soul Creations Photography

Photography; Indiana, Michigan, Tennessee, Illinois and the Midwest. Available for travel nationwide

Sinikka Rohrer's first tried her hand at photography during an underwater photo internship in South Africa. Over the next four years, she worked various roles in the industry, but prayer brought her to a desire to glorify the Lord in her work. Sinikka founded Soul Creations Photography with a unique emphasis on spiritual support for her couples.

This heart for the sacrament of marriage is reflected in Soul Creations's client experience, which has blossomed into full-blown ministry: Sinikka and her team are firm believers in both practical and spiritual support for her couples, happy not just to answer logistical wedding-day questions but to intercede in prayer for her clients and share insights through podcasts and social media.

Favorite saint: Teresa of Calcutta

On my bucket list: Go on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, own a vacation home in Colorado, and photograph an international destination wedding.

Best wedding day memory: the letters that my husband, Alan and I exchanged prior to the ceremony. We sat back to back holding hands and read the letters before Alan prayed over the day and our marriage. All the emotions that were felt from this moment to walking down the aisle were absolute certainty and full communion with God and with man!

OC Media

Photography and Videography; Colorado.

The dress, the meal, the decor, and other wedding details do offer major understanding on the surface. The day that they showed up to a wedding empty-handed, with only their camera in tow, they set out to capture the day in a real, memorable way. Hours of footage and editing later, they presented their first wedding video as a gift to the couple, and the response let fall the Holy Spirit. Brianna and Keenan felt the call to continue developing their video skills and established their business soon after.

The OC in OC Media stands for Oculi Cordis, Latin for "eyes of the heart." The Fitzpatricks' work embodies this invitation to share in the inner life of their clients, to see with more than just what the eye can know.

From Keenan and Brianna: We call OC Media a ministry because we believe it is a tool and gift God has given to us to express to others the beauty that exists in their life--a beauty that is an undeniable gift from their Creator. So many moments in life, whether it's a marriage, graduating from high-school, or a baby's first steps are opportunities for us to encounter our God, ourselves, others, and the world around us in a profound way.

We desire to convey this by engaging in others' lives through relationship and by capturing moments that will hopefully be constant reminders of the giftedness of this life!

We also desire to develop real relationships with each of our clients. When we take clients, we are not just contracting a job with them, we want to get to know the couple or the individual beforehand and continue that relationship after their session. This, we believe, is the call of every human being: to encounter another in a real way.

If we are to truly capture events and important moments in people's lives, we need to know who we are capturing. We're eager to learn about each person's dreams, desires, wants, needs, loves, and even pains. We hope this sets us apart, and we hope and pray others witness the difference.

Our job and privilege is to enlighten others hearts through our eyes and your own. To be enlightened means having greater knowledge of and understanding of something. We hope that you are enlightened by the work we do, to not only see just photography or videography, but to see the beauty, truth, and goodness behind every shot, and in every video. May it open the eyes of your heart!

The Mantilla Company

Wedding veils; nationwide and international shipping available.

Mantilla simply means “veil” in Spanish, and typically refers to the lacy chapel veils worn by older women at Mass in Spain and other Latin American countries. Many women still choose to wear a Spanish-style veil on their wedding day as a nod to the ancient Catholic tradition of veiling that which is sacred.

While planning her wedding, Gloria Franklin wanted to wear an authentic, Spanish-made mantilla to incorporate her heritage and faith into her bridal look. Her local search for the right veil ended in frustration: the selection was small, the cost was steep, and the mantillas did not have a traditional Spanish look to them. Thanks to her family in Spain, Gloria was able to find the perfect handmade, heirloom-quality mantilla at a quarter of the cost of a similar veil in the US. Through this experience, Gloria was inspired to help other brides find the mantilla-style veil of their dreams without breaking the bank, and The Mantilla Company was born.

Gloria hand-selects each veil that she sells from trusted Spanish vendors, and asks her brides to send her photos of their wedding dress so she can suggest a veil that complements it perfectly. The intricate and diverse lace patterns and varying lengths ensure that each bride can find exactly what she is looking for, and the reasonable prices provide budgetary peace of mind.

From Gloria: I truly feel blessed, honored and flattered to be able to do this work. It is so important to me to express my gratitude to my customers and I try to do that by putting a lot of thought into my selections for each bride. I love receiving emails (and photos!) from satisfied brides, whether it’s after try their mantilla on for the first time or after their wedding.

Our Vendors for This Month:

I’m Mary Katherine

Dallastown, Pennsylvania; Serving Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, Virginia and available for travel

Mary Kate Anthony fell in love with photography at a young age. Her desire to be a professional photographer naturally became a reality shortly after high school. She reflects, “I believe that God gave me a gift and love for photography and with that gift is the responsibility to use this gift the way he intended me to use it.” Mary Kate brings her whole heart into her work as she builds meaningful relationships with the couples she photographs and entrusts her business to Christ.

Favorite saints and devotions: I have a huge love of St. Faustina and a devotion to Divine Mercy. I also love St. John Paul II (Theology of the Body is my favorite area of theology). St. Joseph and St. Therese of Lisieux are a few of my other favorites.

Favorite place I’ve traveled: This is so hard to narrow down because I love to travel and have been blessed to have been to a lot of places. I don't think I can pick a favorite location but I can say my favorite trip I've ever taken was when I walked the entire Camino de Santiago during the summer of 2018.

Favorite books, movies and podcasts: I LOVE books so I'll try to narrow down this list. Some of my top favorites include all of C.S. Lewis's books, any book by Henri Nouwen, I Believe in Love, the entire Harry Potter series, The Book Thief, and A Man Called Ove. My massive praise and worship Spotify playlist is pretty much always my top choice of music and some of my current favorite songs include "House on a Hill" (Amanda Cook), "Yes I Will" (Vertical Worship) "Known" (Tauren Wells), and "We Dance" (Bethel Music). Also, not exactly music, but I also love to listen to podcasts so top two favorite podcasts are "Abiding Together" and "The Place We Find Ourselves".

Elizabeth M Photography

Baltimore, Maryland; available for travel

Elizabeth Mahon purchased her first camera to document a semester abroad in Austria; little did she know, it would become a pivotal tool in forming her vocation as a wedding photographer. Elizabeth’s love for people—and her extrovert personality—is a source of inspiration, energy and passion in her photography and client-relationships. Even more, her identity in Christ is the ultimate foundation for who she is and how she lives each day.

Favorite professional sports teams: I'm a die hard Cheesehead. Go Pack Go! (If you know, you know)

Favorite memory from my wedding day: My husband and I were married in a historical Gothic church in downtown Baltimore complete with intricate stained glass, towering white pointed arches, and a ribbed vault ceiling. I remember picking the church because of its physical beauty. Gothic architecture is designed to incline oneself to heaven. Being present in that setting with all of our family and friends, I will never forget how it truly felt like a little taste of heaven. The nuptial mass was definitely my favorite part of our wedding day!

3 things on my bucket list:

1. Visit all 50 states...33 down, 17 to go!

2. Do a great American Road trip from coast to coast

3. Celebrate the 4th of July in Pawhuska, OK with The Pioneer Woman, Ree Drummond (I love her)

Visual Grace

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; available for worldwide travel

For artist Kate Capato, truth, goodness, and beauty are both the origin and destination for her creative work. She is inspired by the goodness of God and strives to reveal God’s goodness in meaningful ways through her photographs (and other forms of art). When photographing weddings, Kate savors the moments when she is a witness to the Holy Spirit moving through the bride and groom.

Favorite saints and devotions: Our Lady of Guadalupe and St John Paul II, both artists and lovers of beauty. JPII plays a special role in my work due to his teaching on Theology of the Body and his love of the arts. Our Lady of Guadalupe is quite present in my life as well; a mother of the Americans and an artist in so many ways, she is a witness of profound love and openness. I could go on all day about the two of them.

Favorite place I’ve traveled: Cinque Terra, Italy. It is a beautiful hiking experience that over looks the sea and brings you into the cute tiny italian villages. Every step is breathtaking, not to mention the wine is phenomenal.

Ministries I’m involved in: The Culture Project

Our Vendors for This Month:

Claire Watson Photography

Martinsburg, West Virginia; Serving West Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Virginia

Claire Watson strives to make a personal connection with the brides and grooms whom she works with. In fact, building a relationships with her couples is a source of inspiration “to create images that will help transport a husband and wife back to a moment when they felt incredibly lucky to be marrying this person, when they felt completely elated to be entering into this vocation with their best friend.”

Claire has a professional background as a licensed attorney with a specialization in business litigation; however, she has since committed her full-time career to emotion-driven, joy-inducing wedding photography.

Favorite part of weddings: Weddings give people permission to feel deeply. Not just between the couple, but how loved they are by their family. A sister reminiscing about their childhoods during a toast, a mom soaking in the dance with her son, a father encouraging his daughter in the nervous moments just before the procession.

Favorite hot beverage: I'm a tea drinker. Honey and whole milk please! Chai if you've got it.

Favorite saints: Saints Perpetua and Felicity, and of course Mother Mary, are my go-to girls. I call them my triple-threat and sometimes will start a prayer, with "Ladies, I need you in on this one!" When I went through challenges as a new mom, I really think Sts. Perpetua and Felicity interceded for me. When I later lost two babies in miscarriage, I asked Perpetua and Felicity to take special care of my children in heaven. I also greatly admire the tenacity and feminine power of Sts Claire and Catherine of Siena, whom my eldest is named after. My son is named after St. Kolbe and St. Joseph . My youngest, born during the pandemic, is named after Gianna Molla, in a nod to our brave health care workers putting their own lives and family stability on the line for others.

Emma Dallman Photography

Long Island City, New York; Serving New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and available for travel

Emma Dallman has had a camera in her hand since she was a young child. Over the years, she has invested in herself, made mistakes, and established a business knowledge to compliment her love for photography.

Throughout a wedding day, she strives to capture the tiny details and moments which make each couple unique, while maintaining a comfortable and natural setting for the couple in front of the camera. “I love serving Catholic brides! Photographing a couple entering into the sacrament of marriage always reminds me of the blessing of my own Catholic marriage, and encourages me to go home and love my husband a little better.”

Ministries I am involved in: I’ve been involved in Young Adult ministry and Theology of the Body education for years! Rachel’s Vineyard is also an incredibly important ministry that’s close to my heart.

Favorite place I’ve traveled: It’s not the most exotic place I’ve visited, but Yosemite Valley in California is my favorite place in the world. My family and I camped there every summer while I was growing up, so in my mind it’s equal parts nostalgic AND majestic.

Love means: Married love means thinking of yourself second. It's always asking yourself - "how can I help my spouse?" It's evaluating whether aspects of your life are good for them or not. Ultimately, it’s helping the other person get to heaven.

Organic Conceptions

Serving clients nation- and world-wide

Organic Conceptions began with founders Erin and Marc Sherman’s personal struggle in trying to conceive for close to a decade. Using both qualitative and quantitative research practices, they dug deep into stories from couples like them who unexpectedly overcame infertility. Every story individually holds a massive amount of insight, which, when woven together, provides a road map that can guide others on a journey to parenthood and beyond.

Favorite saint: St Anthony! My wife and I have a funny story when we were just married. After putting our boat into the water at a boat ramp we then dropped our keys into the ocean.  No keys, no car, no way to get the boat out. Long story short, St Anthony saved the day.

Favorite memory of my wedding day: The extreme heat that we dealt with which led to the entire wedding party jumping into a pool. Definitely not part of the plan but made for great memories!

Love means: Doing something that matters. Giving to others. Finding the good. Promoting love. Trusting and being open in times of uncertainty.

Our Vendors for This Month:

Madeleine Deighan Photography

Charlottesville, VA | Serving Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C. and available for travel

Madeleine Zinman’s career as a wedding photographer started casually with family and friends before she began taking on additional clients. She is inspired by beauty and desires to contribute something beautiful back to the world through her profession. “The wedding day is compiled of  many simple moments and small details.  With every wedding, I take each of these pieces, weave it into a story, and then return it to the couple and their families to remind them of the blessings and love surrounding them on this day and throughout their lives.  I can only hope that the talents given to me by God somehow bring others close to Christ and His Truth.”

Favorite food: A buttery rich steak with a good glass of red wine.  But also chocolate and mochi ice cream.

Favorite saints and devotions: I always felt called to motherhood, even at a young age, so when I was confirmed at sixteen, I chose St. Gianna as my patron. I have my own little litany of saints who have helped me throughout my life and whose intersession I ask for frequently. My favorite prayers are the Memorare and the prayer to St. Michael.

Favorite memory of your wedding day: My home parish was run by the Fraternity of Saint Peter, so we were married in the Tridentine Rite, right at the beginning of the ceremony. As we returned to our chairs at the front to begin the Mass, I distinctly recall feeling a wave of peace  and deep love rush over me. I looked at the man who had just become my husband and felt so at home, so strong in our relationship, now united with God. "This feels so right and full of goodness, this is where I am supposed to be," were the words that came to my mind. I sincerely believe that it was the graces of the Sacrament that were immediately available for us to draw upon, and I am so grateful that I had such a tangible experience with them. And since that day over three years ago, I have never lost that sense of abundant grace that is always there for those harder times that I struggle to be kind, patient, or apologize for wrongdoing.

Made Myers-Cook Photography

Dallas, Texas | Serving Pensacola, Florida; Dallas, Texas; Los Angeles, California; United Kingdom, and available for travel worldwide

Madi Myers-Cook describes her business as “adventurous love story.” On the one hand, she seek to capture the adventure and love of a couple’s story on their wedding day through beautiful photography. On the other hand, she embarks in her own adventurous love story as she receives the Lord’s promises for her life through her relationships and her business. “I love how the Father has already written our love story and we get to wake up to the wonder of it every day!... I want to capture people the way the Father sees every couple--redeemed, beautiful, whole and absolutely in LOVE with each other.”

Favorite saints: The Holy Family, Saint John Paul II, Saint Mary Magdalene, Saint Agnes… the list could go on…

Favorite thing about working on weddings: I love the small moments between Bride and Groom- the belly laughs, the tickle fights, the goosebumps. My other favorite part is just being friends with my couples!!! The connection and trust that friendship brings to photography allows everyone to be their complete, messy, beautiful, fully alive selves!

Love means: I'm learning that love is, of course, willing to the good of the other. Even more, I'm learning love is an act freely chosen that encourages the other's freedom. Love destroys the ego, the pride, the boxes we try to put other people into and encourages the other's freedom. That's the journey I'm walking through right now.

Chari Films

Bronx, New York | Serving New York City, New Jersey, Connecticut

Justo Diaz was raised in a Catholic home, but developed an intimate and personal relationship with Christ as a young adult. He prayed, a simple prayer: “how would you like for me to serve you, Jesus?” Through joyful memories and a spirit of courage, God called Justo to quit his fulltime job and pursue videography full-time.  His mission is to share the truth of the Catholic faith and to evangelize through his videos. “ My Catholic faith allows me to be vulnerable with my clients, my brothers and sisters in Christ, who are about to embark on a new journey together. It allows me to always begin and end our conversations with prayer, calling upon the Holy Spirit to remain with us as we discuss all of the plans for a given wedding. It helps us to remain in the same Spirit and allows for us to trust in the Spirit to guide every conversation with my clients.”

Three things on your bucket list:

1. Do the "El Camino" pilgrimage in Spain.

2. Go to Jerusalem to visit the Holy Land.

3. Create a Christian featured film.

My favorite thing about working on weddings: To witness to the devout Catholic couple who have chosen to come together to live for the Lord. It brings me much hope to witness new couples who desire to live out their faith together and begin their own domestic church with their new union. Being able to film the biggest decision of their lives vocationally speaking and provide them with a memory of their special day that they can forever cherish brings me much joy.

Favorite books, movies, and music: I love to read anything written by Dr. Scott Hahn. My favorite movies have to be anything involving superheroes from all the Marvel movies to the DC Universe superheroes. My favorite Christian band is United Pursuit & Shane and Shane.

Sarah Wirth Photography

Oregon | Serving Oregon, Arizona, and throughout the United States

Sarah Wirth is a wife and mother who aspires to create and build authentic relationships through her photography business. With this in mind, she has an eye for the real and meaningful moments of the wedding day, “the moments which create the foundation of marriages.” She recalls a favorite photo from her own wedding day and hopes to capture similar moments for her couples. “It was a simple photo, but one that captured my favorite moment from the day: the unique time we had as a newlywed couple to ask the Blessed Mother to watch over our marriage and begin this new stage centered on faith.”

Favorite part about working on weddings: Hands down the joy of the couple on their wedding day! It is contagious and inspiring to see a joyful couple just beginning their marriage, and  to witness the love and support of family and friends. I feel like each wedding I shoot I get to relive my own wedding day, and am reminded of our own vows and commitment we made to one another.

Favorite place traveled: That's a really tough question, and so hard to choose...probably Florence because I spent several months there studying and it became a second home for me. But a close second would be Spain while walking the Camino!

Favorite memory of your wedding day: My favorite memory from our wedding day was the few moments in our ceremony where we gave flowers and said a prayer before the Blessed Mother. My husband had  surprised me and written a prayer for us to read at that point in the mass, and it was so special to have the little time together to pray and be alone just a few minutes after saying our vows. We have that prayer framed in our living room now, and hope to continue praying it together as a family throughout the years!

Fiat Photography

Indiana-based, serving surrounding states and the midwest; available for nationwide travel.

Even in her childhood, Claire Dezember loved taking photos. After graduating high school, she began working with wedding photographers and videographers and loved the experience.

Two years later, while serving as a missionary for Christ in the City, Claire engaged daily with the poor in Denver and worked in marketing for the mission--specifically, through photography. “I accumulated many portraits of the homeless that portrayed raw, real emotions, something I never witnessed before,” says Claire. “That is when I fell in love with portrait photography, especially photographing authenticity and emotion.” Fiat Photography launched in 2018, with Claire’s hope of “inspiring, encountering, and loving” every person she encounters.

Best places I’ve traveled: Boulder, Colorado and Charleston, South Carolina.

On my bucket list: Get married and have children (God willing), climb to the top of a fourteener (a 14,000+ ft high mountain), and travel around Europe.

What inspires your work? Fiat has had a very important meaning in my life for a while now, especially while I was a missionary in Colorado. I was always inspired by Mary and her "yes" to God's plan for her. She dropped everything to follow God. That is how I [try to live] my life, and following that calling has blessed me beyond measure (along with the hardships and struggles that come with saying yes).

I knew I wanted to carry that mindset and love throughout my business. Therefore, Fiat Photography was created. I knew I wanted to photograph Catholic weddings because it was so close to my heart, but with my experience loving and caring for the homeless, I knew I wanted to open my arms to all couples. I want to be a light to everyone I encounter, and this business gives me the opportunity to do just that. I focus on authentic and real moments.

Caitlin Renn Photography

Serving Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, California, Oregon, and Washington.

As a new mother, Caitlin Renn began to view the passage of time in a new light, eager to absorb her son’s growing wonder and development. She took to photography to capture his growth, and felt the stirrings of a realization “that I would love to be a photographer.”

She hesitated, though, “not because I thought [my husband] wouldn’t support me, but more because I wasn’t sure I supported me. Voicing that dream out loud made it real, and that was scary. The risk of failing seemed bigger than the reward of succeeding. But when I did tell him what was on my mind and heart, when I was able to be vulnerable and share my dreams, he was so incredibly excited for me. And his excitement encouraged me to share even more, and suddenly, my dream included him, too. His affirmation helped me find the courage to explore these talents that I believe God has given me.” Caitlin Renn Photography was founded in 2019.

I root for...the Seattle Sounders, and also love the U.S. Women’s Soccer team. I was so excited when they won the World Cup!

Favorite wedding day memory: My husband and I wanted to go to Confession right before our ceremony so we could enter marriage as purely as possible. Twenty minutes before our ceremony, I stood with our priest in this dark hallway between the church and the rectory, and he heard my confession. I have never felt such peace wash over me as I received that sacrament; it still leaves me in awe as I reflect on it. My husband and I also prayed together before the ceremony, just the two of us, without seeing each other. Receiving three sacraments in one day, and starting a marriage in prayer, was such a joy!

How does your Catholic faith inform your work? I recently listened to an Abiding Together podcast episode about what restored masculinity and restored femininity should look like. Ultimately, it touched on the importance of spiritual fatherhood and spiritual motherhood. Our priests and nuns are critical in the restoration of the Church. But fathers and mothers are critical in the restoration of families.

Mother Teresa said that if we want to change the world, we need to go home and love our families. Ultimately, I want my work to reflect that restoration. I want my images to showcase the protective love a father has for his children; the wild and deep love he has for his wife. I want people to see my photos and know the love of God is alive and real and very present in the everyday. I want people to look at my photos and not see the wedding day, the fancy flat lays and invitation suites and the perfect white dress. I want them to see the beginning of a marriage. A marriage that will bring hope back to the world that too often only sees statistics of failed marriages. Ultimately, I want people to look at my images and see Christ: the way he loves, the way he gives, and the way he brings light in the darkness.

Chelsea Sliwa Photography

Based in Dallas; available for nationwide and international travel.

“My business began out of a desperate longing to experience truth, beauty and goodness --three things I think we all long to experience in our daily lives,” says Chelsea Sliwa. “Three things that I struggled to find in my corporate job, in a cubicle ruled by structured procedure, four monitors, and binary decisions. Three things that I found with the very first shutter release.”

Chelsea first pursued photography as a creative hobby offering a contrast to her corporate routine, and says it became “abundantly clear” almost immediately that she had heard and answered a call. She began taking engagement photos for friends, and established her business shortly after. Chelsea loves wedding photography for its beauty: “the way a couples eyes look in each other’s familiar gaze.” She loves it for its truth: “that our authentic relationships are what’s really worth cherishing in this life.”And she loves it for its goodness: “in God’s gentle way of showing us his love through one another.”

Ministry work I’m involved in: I volunteer with an organization called In My Shoes, which houses, cares for, teaches, and supports homeless pregnant women in Dallas. It is a wonderful ministry and I have had some incredible moments with moms whose strength inspires me. In the worst of scenarios, they choose to bring life into the world. It is a true honor to walk next to them.

I take my coffee: with almond milk only, please!

Favorite books: A Severe Mercy by Sheldon Vanauken, Interior Freedom by Jacques Phillipe, Into Your Hands, Father by Wilfrid Stinissen, Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly, and The Reed of God by Caryll Houselander.

Simple Heart Photography

Serving Indiana & Ohio; available for nationwide travel.

A lifelong lover of weddings, Rachel Meier was drawn in the first time she viewed one photographer’s work, observing “the details and the emotions of the day in a way I had not seen before.” Simple Heart Photography offers expert help, intercession, and a commitment to turning pure emotion and experience into art.

Now, with years of experience and as a wife and mother of five, Rachel still loves capturing emotion and reverence on her clients’ wedding days. Rachel’s husband is her second shooter, and each time they hear a bride a groom say their vows, “it’s a balm to my soul,” she says.

Favorite Devotion: the Divine Mercy Chaplet. This prayer has gotten me through some hard situations.

The best part about working in weddings: I love capturing the emotions and sweet moments that happen throughout the day: the Mother of the Bride really looking at her daughter for the first time when she is all dressed’ the bride choking up when she says "I take you as my husband;" the bride and groom exchanging glances through the ceremony; the groom playing with the new ring on his finger; the first dance and the Father-Daughter dance, which often makes me cry!

Love means: Giving all. Sacrifice. Putting the needs of others in front of yours.

Our Vendors for This Month:

Designs by Jessina

Bismark, North Dakota and surrounding areas

Jessina Kary began taking photographs as a hobby. Over time, her skills, experiences and desire to make financial contributions for her growing family inspired a business venture. Designs by Jessina is a way to support couples and to empower marriage throughout the challenges of daily life.

“When I started my photography business, I realized I wanted to do more than just show up for a photo session. I want to cultivate a sense of hospitality and friendship with everyone I work with. Marriage is hard. Life is hard. I want to live the Gospel for the people I encounter simply by my example and by being someone others can talk to. I don’t want to just photograph weddings. I want to see marriages succeed.”

My coffee order: Cream and brown sugar

Love means: Putting yourself last. Apologizing first. Forgiving quickly. Letting go of the small things.

My favorite thing about working on weddings: I would say the wedding day itself. It's busy, but everyone is happy, excited! I enjoy being able to make sure the couple gets a few moments alone for their first look shots, and for the photos of just the two of them - it's most likely the only time they will have alone the entire day - not counting the photographer ;) I also enjoy getting to know the members of the wedding party, the family, and the light banter that goes on throughout the day.

Fine & Fun Cookie Co.

Sweets delivered throughout the contiguous continental United States

Diane Able has decades of experience as a wife and mother, homemaker and baker. Through the years, a Christmas cookie-baking tradition transformed into a hobby and, now, a professional endeavor. Through Fine and Fun Cookie Co, Diane strives to bring joy to others through her creative cookies. But at the core of her sweet passion is a love for family.

“My family inspires my work. My husband has supported us in the same job for over 40  years. Because I stayed at home, finances have always been tight. Now that he wants to think about retirement, I want to really make a go of my business so that when he does retire, we can work together.”

Love means: Making things work. Being generous. Trying to be as unconditional as possible. Accepting faults. Saying you're sorry and meaning it if you're at fault. Biting your tongue when you really want to lash out. Being a good listener. Giving your best as often as you think of it.

My favorite books and movies: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and all books by Jane Austin.

My favorite memory of my wedding day: The moment we took our vows. It was such a spiritual and emotional moment. I loved the confidence in my husband's voice when he spoke his vows before God and me and our friends and family.

Abbey Rez Photography

Southern California and available for travel

Abbey Reznicek thought she had discerned a vocation to religious life. But her spiritual director encouraged her to pursue film school and the trajectory of her life quickly changed. While at film school, she met her husband. They collaborated on film projects, laughed together, got engaged, planned their own wedding and got married. Now, Abby and her husband use their shared passion for storytelling to tell the love stories of the couples they serve.

“In a culture where traditional marriage and the family is under attack, I feel called to inspire others in their marriage, keeping Christ as the center of their life both on their wedding day and every day after.”

My favorite saints: St. Joseph, St. Therese of Lisieux, and Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati!

St. Joseph was key in my discernment and ultimately helped bring me to my vocation! I like to consider St. Therese my business partner, as we have dedicated the business to her - in an industry where over-the-top expense is encouraged, I think she is a great role model for every bride because of her simplicity, pleasing Christ being her only desire. Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati become a patron of our marriage. Verso L'Alto has become our family motto and we named our son Pier Giorgio (Gio for short).

My favorite food: Pizza all the way! I married a Chicago man and we take this very seriously.

Three things on my bucket list: Impact and encourage marriages through our photography business. Travel to Turin where Bl. Pier Giorgio lived and hike one of his mountains. Turn my little patio garden into a home solarium one day.

BEBEATI Catholic Jewelry

Serves clients nationwide

Siggy Everts has been creating jewelry since she was a child. With tools from her father’s iron workshop and an eye for sparkly trinkets, she would make something beautiful out of found materials. She continued making jewelry for many years; it wasn’t until her reversion to the Catholic faith when BEBEATI began. Siggy’s passions for creating beauty and pursuing intimacy with Christ faith meld together through this full-time work.

“My Catholic faith is the center of my life. Since my reversion, the business was reoriented to creating Catholic jewelry. I have always made jewelry for brides… [now] I can provide an opportunity for brides to purchase their bridal gifts and jewelry from a Catholic source.”

Favorite place I’ve traveled: This is a difficult one. I've been fortunate to have traveled to some beautiful places. I would say, La Salette, France.

The inspiration for my work comes from: God and everything that He created; beaches , landscapes, sky, flowers—anything inspires me and the jewelry I craft. My Catholic faith is the ultimate source of my business and the center of my life.

Languages spoken: English, Portuguese, and Spanish

Emmaus Films

Wedding videography; serving Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.

Kevin Lohrmann grew up with a love for camera work, but after graduating from Franciscan University, he chose to pursue a career in web development instead. The following year, as freelance videography opportunities with Catholic organizations coincided with changes at his company, Kevin took his side hobby full time. Emmaus Films launched in 2018.

From the start, most of Emmaus’ clients have been Catholic ministries, churches, and individuals. Kevin brings his years of experience to a “personalized, reverent” approach with brides and grooms, striving always to highlight the gift of beauty: “beauty in the sacrament of marriage; beauty in the people's stories; beauty in God's creation.”

I root for...the Baltimore Ravens!

Favorite movie: A Beautiful Mind

Love means: The total self gift of one person to another, while expecting nothing in return. I've also heard it as "The willing of the good of the other, as other."

Fenix Photography, Design, & Events

Wedding photography; based in Virginia and available for national and international travel.

Maria W. and her fiancé Dayton have pursued a variety of creative hobbies since their childhoods. When they first learned photography and realized the emotive power of visual storytelling, they were hooked. “Photography is not point-and-click or copying Pinterest poses, it's about creating an environment where you can capture your client's best self, and creatively capturing authentic moments that they will treasure for the rest of their lives.”

“Our business motto is "God writes the story... we just document it." because we believe that we are just the people who capture the deepest form of love that He can bestow on two people.  We do our best to help our couples keep perspective throughout the wedding planning that even though all of the wedding details are very important, ultimately the joining of them in marriage is the most important part of the day.”

Our coffee order: We prefer Arnold Palmers!

Favorite saint: Kateri Tekakwitha

The best part of working on weddings: Since we spend so much time together on the biggest day of their lives, we love building a relationship throughout [our] couples’ engagements so that by the time of the wedding we are not vendors, but friends. This relationship is what builds trust so that the only thing they need to worry about is being in the moment with their spouse. For us, there is no greater feeling or "rush" than having the honor to capture the exact moment that God joins two souls for the rest of their lives.

Handmaid Home

Custom wedding quilts and bridal party gifts; handmade in North Dakota and available for nationwide shipping.

Kathleen Causapin’s first sewing projects were handmade bags. Years later, she learned the art of quilting and fell in love.

There’s something special about wedding gifts that don’t stay tucked away for special occasions, but that become a daily, visible part of a couple’s life together. On the couch or hung on a wall, a wedding quilt becomes just that. According to Kathleen, “I see a quilt as a tangible reminder of that special day, with the unique ability to travel with the couple as they enter into the day-to-day life of marriage.” Handmaid Home specializes in quilts and cosmetics bags--the small bags are an ideal bridesmaid gift--with custom colors, designs, and your wedding date.

Favorite prayer: I have a special devotion to the Miraculous Medal.  It was part of our uniform at my high school and we each received a gold Miraculous Medal at graduation, which I still wear and even tied to my wedding bouquet!  Visiting the Shrine of the Miraculous Medal in Paris, where Mary appeared to St. Catherine Labouré, was an incredible spiritual experience.

Best places I’ve traveled: Jordan is one of my favorites. There is so much history there and because it is relatively untouched, you really feel a part of it. It was incredible to look out from the top of Mt. Nebo and see the Promised Land that God showed Moses. I also studied abroad in Ireland and have been back several times, so it will always hold a special place in my heart.

Favorite book: I read Death Comes for the Archbishop, by Willa Cather, two years ago and have been telling basically everyone I know to read it ever since! I think knowing that Cather wasn't Catholic, yet still wrote with such beauty about Catholicism, makes it even more powerful.

Vendor Week 2020 | Vendors Share: First Steps, Priorities, + Working With Non-Catholic Vendors

As you book your wedding vendors and plan your wedding-day timeline and events, take advantage of your vendors’ expertise! As pros in their respective fields, your vendors are a valuable source of information and assistance with time management.

We asked Spoken Bride vendors to share their best, tried and true tips for working with your vendors--either Catholic or non-Catholic--from your first days of engagement and on through your wedding day. Here, their responses:

What first steps can newly engaged couples take as they look into wedding vendors?

Set clear boundaries. I recommend that everyone involved in planning the wedding--bride, groom, and parents--create a personal list of three priorities for the wedding and three things that are not a big deal. Then, compare. Have a conversation with everyone and create a master priority list. This will help guide your decision-making, as well as your budget. to make decisions.

Online budget creators are a great tool. Once you have your master priority list, [you’re empowered to] create a budget that reflects your personal priorities, not just industry standards. Together, your priority list and budget will help you narrow down the big selection of vendors. -  Savanna Faulkner, Saving the Date (Wedding Coordination)

This is quite simple, but so crucial: find a resource that lists potential categories of all the wedding vendors you could possibly need. This will help you to nix the vendors you might not want and then hone your list to those that are non-negotiable. From there, you can play with what’s within your budget for the extra niceties, like a photobooth or décor. -Nia Husk, Prolific Services (NFP Instruction and Fertility Education)

Talk with friends and family who have recently gotten married. For instance, if you are looking for a photographer, ask the couple about their experience, and ask for the link to their entire wedding gallery. With these vendors, as well as others you’re considering, ask yourselves: Do they share my same style + wedding vision in their work? Is creating an authentic relationship with clients a priority for their business? Do they reflect love in their work?

Also, ask your venue if they have a list of preferred vendors whom they enjoy working with; those who take amazing care of their couples and provide a fabulous product. And before booking anyone, meet with them in person first! Make sure you vibe together and that they are a fit both creatively and personality wise. - Michelle and Brandon Horn, Horn Photography & Design

What’s distinctive about what Catholic vendors can offer their clients?

Prayers! As I sew a wedding quilt, I always pray for the recipients-:for peace during their wedding preparations, for grace on their wedding day, and for strength in marriage. I also ask the couple (or the gift-giver!) if there are other intentions they would like me to specifically pray for. - Kathleen Wills Causapin, Handmaid Home (Custom wedding quilts)

Choosing practicing Catholic photographers means you will have photographers who know, understand and value the sacredness of the Mass. They will know when and where they can move in the church for the best photos without ever being seen or disrupting the liturgy. Also, a side perk, is that practicing Catholic vendors tend to know most of the priest and staff in the diocese, as they work with them often and see them at mass. The same holds true for Catholic wedding planners and florists - Michelle and Brandon Horn, Horn Photography & Design

My business is relationship-based (which I love!), and I think most Catholic vendors have a similar business model. When your vendor has a relationship-based business and is someone with similar values to you--and your styles jive on top of that!--I think a deeper amount of trust is built more easily. This trust is important when you're investing with so many different vendors for a very important day!

Also, as a Catholic vendor, I pray for my clients during their engagement and during the week of the wedding as I’m designing their wedding flowers. Having extra prayers from those who are helping execute your special day is awesome. - Ashley Krupp, Ashley Eileen Floral Design

I always pray for my couples leading up to their wedding day, and keep them in my intentions long after). It's helpful to have vendors who understand the Mass, and know how to be respectful during the ceremony. All in all, I think catholic vendors can help ease some of the stress, and give you a sense of peace as you prep for the sacrament! - Sarah Wirth, Sarah Wirth Photography

Prayer! Whether the day-of or the months leading up to your wedding, the power of prayer that a fellow Catholic can offer you is awesome. Knowing you can ask for that prayer and share that beautiful aspect with your vendors is so cool! I love being able to tell my Catholic clients I am praying for their relationship from day one. - Lauren Noa, Lauren Emily Photography

What are your favorite ways to help couples incorporate their faith into their wedding day?

My favorite way is to encourage a First Prayer prior to the ceremony. This may be back-to-back or a shared Rosary. It is a wonderful moment to add to your day and takes little time to incorporate. - Sinikka Rohrer, Soul Creations Photography

Encouraging couples to provide a beautifully made and thorough Mass program. This is truly an easy opportunity to evangelize non-Catholic guests and encourage everyone to participate in the Mass through song, Liturgy of the Word, and Liturgy of the Eucharist. If you do a Rosary Lasso, washing of the feet for your spouse, blessing of coins, or present flowers to Mary and/or Joseph, you can add these devotions in and explain them in brief. - Nia Husk, Prolific Services (NFP Instruction and Fertility Education)

I love designing the bouquet for Mary that some couples present to her during Mass. I love her, my clients love her, and we all get to honor her on their wedding day with flowers! Oftentimes, I’ll incorporate rosaries or saint medals into a bride's bouquet. I've also had some couples ask for specific flowers tied to their favorite saint, e.g. lilies for St. Joseph and roses for St. Therese. For one of my brides, I was able to use a white rose named after St. John Paul II that I grew from my own garden! If you have a favorite saint, there might be a flower associated with him or her that you can use as a little way to ask for their [intercession]! - Ashley Krupp, Ashley Eileen Floral Design

Our favorite ways to help couples incorporate their faith into their wedding day is to offer times throughout the day that brings in the joy of what we practice as Catholics. For example, inviting couples to provide family religious items for detail shots, a First Prayer or First look right in the church (if allowed by the church), prayer with your bridal party, going to confession right before the Mass if your priest is available, and encouraging our couples to pray together during portraits.- Michelle and Brandon Horn, Horn Photography & Design

I recommend choosing something special related to your faith from your dating days and bringing to the wedding day.  I walked down the aisle with a pair of rosaries my now-husband gifted me while on a trip to Bosnia. I used that rosary every day to pray for our relationship.  After getting engaged, we chose St Padre Pio as our patron to guide us in our marriage. I also find it so special to buy, borrow or receive a piece of jewelry that depicts the Catholic faith, [as gifts between you and your spouse or with your bridal party].

If there is an opportunity, I recommend that the bride and groom pray before the Tabernacle prior to the processional. In their prayer, they can offer that day up for the sanctity of marriages throughout the world and ask for all Holy Angels and Saints, including their patron saint,  to intercede for their marriage and all married couples always, who entered or will enter into the mystery of this sacrament. - Siggy Evertz, Bebeati Jewelry

How can couples respectfully educate non-Catholic vendors on the religious aspects of the wedding day?

If you choose a non-Catholic photographer, be sure to educate them on the order of the Mass. Often, I'll hear other photographers say that they think of Catholic Masses as being really long without much going on. They stop shooting because, to them, it's redundant. Or they might stay in one spot out of fear that they'll break the church's rules about where a photographer is allowed--some churches are really strict about photographers moving about, but most just want to make sure the photographer is respectful, won't be distracting, and will stay off the altar.

If it's important to have the Mass documented, you'll need to explain these restrictions and allowances in detail. You might even ask the parish wedding coordinator to help take your photographer around at the rehearsal and identify a safe spot to shoot and where they should be for certain aspects of the ceremony. This can be a lot of information for a non-Catholic to absorb, so I'd suggest they go to the rehearsal and take notes on the program as a cheatsheet. - Claire Watson, Claire Watson Photography

If you are not working with a Catholic photographer, it is important that they know how long your wedding Mass will be and what it means to you as a couple. Assign a friend who knows his or her faith and way around a church and Mass to meet your photographer at the church so they can answer any questions your photographer may have regarding the Mass and what will take place. A non-catholic photographer might not know terms like sanctuary, kneelers, or sacristan. They may not know the order of the Mass, the importance of the consecration, or when you will be able to share your first kiss. Helping them know ahead of time will help your photographer capture the best photos possible.

And the biggest tip: this is your day to soak in all the sacrament of marriage has to offer. Feel the freedom to share your faith with all your vendors! Let them truly know what this day means for you. - Michelle and Brandon Horn, Horn Photography & Design

Vendor Week 2020 | A Photographer's Tips for a Sacred, Memorable "First Prayer" Before Your Ceremony

SINIKKA ROHRER

Your wedding photographer is there to help you discern and plan a First Look before your wedding ceremony begins. A First Look, in addition to offering you and your spouse a moment of personal joy and quiet, makes it possible to get many portrait photos out of the way prior to guests arriving and minimizes the time guests are waiting for the reception to begin. As you plan your timeline with your photographer, talk together about whether you'd like to do a First Look and if you’d like to bring in an element of prayer.

Whether as a supplement to or substitute for a First Look, I highly recommend considering a First Prayer—not just for photos, but also for a phenomenal, precious moment that you and your beloved can hold on to tenderly before the day begins.

Will you and your beloved have a First Look? Read more about considerations for making the decision.

As you and your beloved stand back to back, it not only gives your photographer time for additional images, but allows for a sacred, silent moment of alone time—something couples tend not to have much of throughout their day.

Here, 3 steps toward making your moment together sacred and special:

Stand back-to-back

One of my couples, Becca and Brian, wanted to have their First Prayer in the chapel, under the cross of Christ, on their wedding morning. Before we led Becca to her place, Brian had already been positioned, with his body faced away from the door as he stood beneath the cross of the One who loves him so deeply.

After Brian was prepared, my team led Becca to her place as well, knowing in moments she would be in contact with her groom. Even though she wasn’t able to see him, they were right where they wanted to be: next to each other.

Hold hands

My husband and I chose a First Prayer ourselves for the morning of our wedding. We each brought a card for one another to read, and after doing so, we held hands for what seems like the longest moment of the day. Holding his hand helped me feel connected, united, and secure. He wasn’t going anywhere, and I wasn’t either. We hung on for what seemed an eternity.

My clients Amanda and Craig held hands, as well, around the large, wooden door that would open again later when Amanda stepped down the aisle for her bridegroom to behold her.

See Amanda + Craig’s First Prayer and their Classic Ballroom Wedding in Indianapolis

In this moment, Amanda squeezed Craig’s hand tight and let tears slide down her face. She was with her beloved, and no matter what difficulties had come that morning, she was reminded of their sacred bond, their journey to this day, and their unconditional love.

Pray.

As each of these men stood waiting to hear the voice of their brides, I placed my own hand on their shoulders and prayed: that they let Christ lead their marriage and lean on his shoulder as their family leans on them. I prayed they see Christ when they see their brides, knowing the love of these women perfectly reflects the heart of God.

And as these brides, Becca and Amanda, stood anxious to approach their beloveds, I took their hands and prayed, as well: that they lean close to Christ’s chest just as they lean on their spouses’. That they support and walk closely with God, becoming more and more like him, and that they see Christ when they see their groom, knowing his love perfectly reflects the heart of God.

As they stood back to back, hands joined on opposite sides of the door, they prayed. Some of my couples choose to say a Hail Mary, some a Rosary or Chaplet, and some choose spontaneous prayer.

I encourage you to consider including a First Prayer in your timeline! Those moments that you have together are beautiful and will be captured for your album, but the sacred bond that you will feel is even more incredible.

Take these moments to unite your heart with the sacrament about to take place. I wish you all the best on your engagement journey!

Vendor Week 2020 | Embracing Moments More Than Social Media

DAYTON & MARIA

Lights. Camera. Post. After a moment takes place, it can feel like a race to document it and post it on social media.

What used to be experiences shared only by the people present has evolved into an event valued by the number of likes, comments, or shares it gets, not unlike a competition TV show where your peers are the judges and your followers are the audience voting from home.

Don’t misunderstand me! We also posted when we got engaged, when we had engagement pictures taken, and we’re excited to share future wedding photos. With a balanced mindset, social media can be a great tool to share moments with a larger group.

Photography: Fenix Photography, Design, & Events LLC

Photography: Fenix Photography, Design, & Events LLC

As a wedding photographer, though, what can be problematic is when choosing vendors  shifts from Who can capture my day authentically and with a style I like? to Who is trendy or has been reposted on featured accounts and will get a lot of likes?

Consider past generations’ experiences: no app to search wedding hashtags; destination elopements, lavish estate weddings, or rooftop receptions. The quality of a photographer’s work wasn’t based on followers and likes—all that mattered was if you and your fiancé “liked” it, not thousands of others.

Today, so  many brides immediately feel overwhelmed by a cloud of comparison when they start the wedding planning process. Naturally it’s easy to lose sight of what is truly important about the day--entering the sacramental union of marriage.

As photographers, we absolutely understand and encourage prioritizing photography for their wedding, but we also encourage couples to focus more on finding someone that is the right fit for them and your  day—and less on whose pictures are the first search result on social media.

Do we construct our couples’ wedding timelines to allow ample time to take beautiful portraits of the two of them, including extra time at sunset? Yes! Do we make sure to get “the shot” which shows both their emotions and the scenery in such a stunning way that it makes the perfect wall canvas? Absolutely! But during an authentic interaction, the best photographers will never be so focused on the most aesthetically pleasing shot that the attention shifts to taking the picture, rather than the moment itself.

Of course, as photographers we’re constantly moving, climbing, and laying on the ground to get the best shots, but in doing so we’ll never compromise the moment. If we see your grandmother embracing you at the water station, for instance, we are going to take the best picture, with the best angle we can, at that time. Could we interrupt and ask you both to move over to the flower covered arch and re-create the hug again to make the shot “prettier”? Yes. But we never would.

When you look back at the image years from now, we want you to remember how your grandmother pulled you close, whispered wise words about love, and clutched your wedding dress that had pieces of her own sewn into it. Even though you’ll still have posed portraits with her from earlier in the day, the water station picture is the one you will show your children and say, This was your great-grandmother.

We tell all our brides, “your wedding day is an experience, not a glorified photoshoot.” We don’t want our brides to condense one of the biggest days of their lives into a certain short window, which is why our services include all-day coverage. If we really are putting the client’s investment where our mouth is, then in order to authentically capture the day we know we must allow time for those moments to naturally happen.

As photographers, we frequently think of ourselves as directors. We’ve developed a sense for when it’s time to give direction and when it’s time to say action and then disappear into the background. For example, if a bride chooses to do a First Look, we will do our job to ensure  the location, angle, and lighting is the best for that spot, then step back and capture the entirety of the interaction until its natural end.

We don’t have to coach you on how to hug, smile, or cry because the only reaction we want to photograph is the one that naturally happens--which is always the most beautiful.

Have you noticed when wedding stories make the evening news or go viral online, they almost always revolve around an intensely emotional encounter? A bride is walked down the aisle by her ailing father; a handicapped groom surprises his bride by standing for part of their first dance; a letter titled “read this on your wedding day” is given to a bride that her mother wrote years ago before passing away. The meaning of these experiences walking, dancing, and reading can’t be rehearsed for the camera.

The sooner you choose to let go of  “the perfect wedding day,” the fewer  distractions and greater focus on prayerful growth you’ll experience during your engagement. A wedding is one day, but marriage is eternal. Whether you have your reception in a small church hall, or at the most luxurious venue, you still are experiencing the day with the same people.

You can put a price tag on almost everything associated with your wedding day, except for the priceless interactions you have with your loved ones, whether that’s a dedicated handful or a loving army.

The day you became one in spirit with your spouse is irreplaceable. That is why we believe in moments over social media.

About the Authors: Dayton & Maria are an (almost) husband and wife documentary photography team based in Virginia and the owners of Fenix Photography, Design, & Events LLC. Their business motto: "God writes the story; we just document it." “Moments in life are fleeting,” they share, “so it's our job to capture the most joyous ones for you to remember for the rest of your life."

Vendor Week 2020 | A Wedding Planner's Tips for Getting Married in a Historical Catholic Church

JOY FOSTER

Many couples choose to get married in beautiful, landmark Catholic churches that often have a historical significance to them. These churches are known for welcoming non-parishioners when celebrating the sacrament of matrimony.

PHOTOGRAPHY: ABERRAZIONI CROMATICHE STUDIO, SEEN IN FABIOLA + COLE | VATICAN CITY BASILICA WEDDING

PHOTOGRAPHY: ABERRAZIONI CROMATICHE STUDIO, SEEN IN FABIOLA + COLE | VATICAN CITY BASILICA WEDDING

However, this is more than just the “Catholic” version of a destination wedding. It’s also a viable option for couples who have chosen a wedding date only to discover their parish is not available (already booked, major renovation scheduled, etc.). Others may find their own church too small to accommodate a large guest list. Some may look for a “middle ground” location when families live on opposite sides of the country. Or maybe the bride or groom has a family connection going back generations, and they wish to continue the tradition of marrying at a specific church; no matter if they live two parishes over or a thousand miles away.

Whatever the reason, a wedding taking place in an opulent, historic church offers a wonderful opportunity to evangelize via the atmosphere. The sacred surroundings set the tone for prayer and reverence. The story of salvation history is told in the stained glass windows and frescoes that are usually in abundance.

This gives your guests an opportunity to witness the holy beauty of our faith in a way they may never have been exposed to before. It is wonderful to bring a more sacred approach to the celebration of marriage (as does any Catholic wedding) in a world where the current trend for marital celebrations is usually a themed party that can take place anywhere.

With that in mind, here are some important things to remember as you plan your wedding at a historic Catholic church.

Take into account any extra cost

However, one concern with not being a parishioner of a particular church is the cost. In most churches the fee is significantly more for a non-parishioner compared to that of registered and active parishioners. You could view paying the wedding fee as an act of generosity to a place whose operating and general maintenance costs can be astronomical--especially since many of these churches have significantly fewer parishioners than those in suburban areas.

By getting married there, you are also honoring all the founding families whose financial sacrifices helped to build a magnificent church. One boost to your wedding budget is that such a facility rarely needs any additional décor like altar arrangements or pew ribbons, so many couples only purchase bouquets, boutonnieres, and corsages when making floral selections.

Become familiar with their policies

Additionally, the logistics involved with getting married outside your own parish can take more navigation than scheduling a wedding at your own. Before you book a date, look over the church’s guidelines and policies very carefully (a good reminder regardless of where your wedding is taking place). This goes a long way in preventing last-minute disappointments regarding what is allowed for music, decorations, dress code, and access times.

Contact their wedding coordinator

Keep in consistent contact with the parish wedding coordinator throughout the scheduling process, and don’t hesitate to reach out to them should any questions arise. If a church is hosting a fair amount of non-parishioner weddings, they will usually have someone to assist you throughout the process, or someone who can direct you to the appropriate person to help with your concern.

Get permission from your pastor

The final sentence of Canon Law 1115, under “The Form of the Celebration of Marriage” stipulates that, “With the permission of the proper ordinary or proper pastor, marriages can be celebrated elsewhere.” In basic terms, if you wish to be married outside your geographical parish or where you are a registered parishioner, you need the permission of your pastor. That usually involves having your parish priest write a letter giving permission for the marriage to take place in another parish (or university chapel or shrine).

Choose your officiant

Very often, the historic church hosting your wedding will require you to provide your own officiant. If so, he must be a Catholic priest or deacon in good standing within his own diocese or religious order. His bishop or superior will need to provide documentation of this, via a Letter of Good Standing or Testimonial of Suitability for Ordained Ministry. These forms can usually be found on your diocesan website or by contacting the Office of Marriage and Family Life.

Make arrangements for marriage prep

You may also need to make arrangements for required marriage preparation with your officiating priest or deacon, or perhaps the pastoral associate from your home parish. Some hosting churches offer the use of their own priest or staff to conduct marriage prep, but this is not common, so be prepared to need a little extra time and paperwork before your wedding is officially on the schedule.

Work with the parish when planning your music

Because most of these facilities have a pipe organ, they may require or strongly recommend the use of their parish organist or liturgical musicians. This helps to ensure appropriate liturgical music is used for your ceremony, and a large pipe organ is quite useful for filling an entire cathedral with beautiful, sacred music.

Finally, when getting married in such splendid surroundings, there can be a tendency to feel like everything has to be perfect, perhaps even more than if you were in the familiar environment of your home parish. Don’t let those feelings and pressures take hold. Focus on the beauty of each moment, regardless if your wedding takes place in a chapel, a local parish church, a cathedral, or a basilica. At the end of the day, you and your beloved are now "Mr. and Mrs.", joined in one flesh before God, and that's what matters most.

Gathered Together Events

Wedding Coordination; serving Michigan and available for travel.

Allison Krcatovich--one of our brides!--grew up watching the film Father of the Bride and dreamed of “being the female version of [the wedding-planner character],” she says. In 2018, after the birth of her son and over six years in the hotel event-planning industry, Allison quit her hotel job and founded Gathered Together Events, her own coordination company.

Though Gathered Together Events serves a range of couples, Allison has a particular love--and brings particular expertise--to Catholic brides and grooms. She cherishes the opportunity to act as a resource and support for couples whose top priority is bringing their faith to the center of their celebration. Allison describes her services--including consultations, day-of coordination, full wedding coordination, and custom packages--as “service-oriented, joy-filled, and intentional.”

Favorite saint: Teresa of Calcutta. Her care for others encourages me in my work. My business logo is blue as a subtle nod to her and to our Mother Mary.

The best place I’ve traveled: Dubrovnik, Croatia on my honeymoon.

I’m inspired by: My family. I want to support my family with a job I am truly passionate about because I know it will make me a better wife, mother, daughter, friend. Seeing each of my couples so incredibly joyful on their wedding day inspires me in my own personal family life.

Ashley Eileen Floral Design

Floral Design; serving the Denver area.

As her family mourned the loss of her grandfather, Ashley Krupp realized for the first time “ how florists walk with people for very important moments in life, and how flowers really do impact those occasions.” In those moments, she felt certain the Lord was calling her to use flowers as a gift and service to others.

Ashley soon took floral design classes, worked in several floral shops, and was eventually promoted to lead floral designer. In 2018 she used her earnings from the lead designer position to educate herself in business and design and launched Ashley Eileen Floral Design.

Ashley loves the creative pursuit of transforming her clients’ ideas into reality in the design process, as well as the sheer beauty of wedding florals: “Part of the reason I love doing flowers, she says, “is because they are beautiful and reflect the transcendental kind of beauty. I feel called to work with flowers as my ‘small v’ vocation and to affirm the good, true and beautiful in marriages that reflect God’s plan.

“I like to say flowers aren’t really necessary for someone to get married--at the end of the day, she’ll be married to her husband and that is beautiful. However, flowers reflect the gratuitous kind of beauty or love that God lavishes on us; the kind of beauty that stirs the heart and draws the couple and their guests more deeply into the sacrament. I think the beauty of a wedding done well (aesthetically and theologically) help to evangelize by stirring people’s hearts.”

On my bucket list: To help with the flowers at the Kentucky Derby and Rose parade, to own property with acreage, and to visit Havana, Cuba.

Favorite books: Little Women, Anne of Green Gables, Heidi, Introduction to the Devout Life, Forming Intentional Disciples, and the Harry Potter series.

How my faith informs my business: Everything I do comes back to God, what He’s blessed me with and my desire to share Him with others. I think beauty is a gift that allows us to know him on a deeper level, because it cuts straight to our hearts. I think a lot of millennials have a keen awareness and appreciation of beauty, and I see this as a subtle starting point to also share God’s goodness and truth with others who might not know him otherwise. I’ve designed my business model to be relationship-based; it's important for me to get to know my couples so I can walk and pray for them in a real way.

Johnna Wilford, Women’s Wellness Coach

NFP Instruction; serving Lexington, Kentucky in person and nationwide through online education.

Johnna first heard of NFP as she converted to the Catholic faith during her marriage preparation--in fact, she says, “I actually think NFP is one of the things that helped me decide to become Catholic! NFP is so empowering, and such a great tool for communication with a partner, so I quickly became very passionate about it.” A serious runner and women’s health advocate who already owned a fitness business, Johnna became certified in NFP instruction and made it an additional pillar of her business.

A recent bride herself, Johnna has a unique, particular passion for viewing women’s health holistically, teaching clients about the relationships between hormonal and reproductive health and physical fitness. She loves walking with her clients as they consider their fertility, fitness and wellness before marriage--”not,” she says, “simply in a ‘fitting into the wedding dress’ way. Women’s Wellness offers in-person and online coaching in fitness, fertility awareness, and reproductive health.

I root for...the Alabama Crimson Tide. Roll Tide! It's sort of hard not to be a fan when you went to college there!

Ministries I’m involved in: I am a member of a local social justice ministry that works to improve policies in the city. This year we are working on improving the drug problem in town, working to improve education, and decreasing  gun violence in the city. I am also an NFP teacher for the Marriage and Family Office in my diocese.

Favorite Saints: My patron saint is Joan of Arc, not only because of the name similarity, but because I have a passion for fighting for what I believe in! I also love Mama Mary and try to pray the rosary every day.

Something Blue, LLC

Wedding Coordination, serving the dioceses of Indianapolis, Lafayette (Indiana), Evansville, and Fort Wayne-South Bend; available for limited travel in neighboring states.

While sitting at the same reception table at a wedding, friends Joy Foster and Mary Dorhauer discovered they shared a common dream: establishing an event planning and coordination business. As they talked, they wrote down a vision for a Catholic wedding planning business on the spot, hoping to create a service that would “help couples plan a most reverent and beautiful liturgy, along with a really great party; witness the beauty of our Faith and the beauty of the Catholic view on marriage to their Catholic and non-Catholic guests; and be a joyful ministry to brides and engaged couples, so that they and their families could be fully present and enjoy their wedding day, instead of worrying about whether things were getting done or not.”

Joy and Mary’s dreams took root in 2018, when Something Blue, LLC was founded. Along with general inspiration and reception planning, Something Blue specializes in helping Catholic couples plan their nuptial liturgies and personally supports them through the gift of prayer: “Our love of the liturgy and the beauty of marriage inspires us to share that love with couples and their families,” Joy and Mary say. “We customize a novena for each couple and begin it so Day 9 is prayed the morning of the wedding. We offer copies of the novena to the parents of the bride and groom, along with the wedding party, church hostess & clergy, and any vendors that we know are Catholic, should they wish to join their prayers with ours for the couple. We see Something Blue as a ministry, in addition to a business.”

The best part of working on weddings: The joy!  It’s a chance to share in a little slice of someone else’s happiness. Being able to watch the bittersweet moments as fathers tearfully embrace their daughters one last time [during the procession]. Smiling at the triumphant grins on the faces of grooms as the newly minted Mr. and Mrs. exit the church for the first time. Witnessing families come together to celebrate a fresh branch of their family tree. Most of all, the moment during a Nuptial Mass when the priest elevates the Holy Eucharist, with the eyes of the bride and groom upon him, the Body of Christ. It gives us goosebumps every time!

Favorite wedding-day memory: (Mary): On our first date, my husband and I went to Mass and then covered the car of a mutual friend in Post-It notes. It was revenge for a joke she played trying to set the two of us up. I guess she got the last word though, since we got married and now have two children!

When planning our wedding, I told our priest I wanted to go straight from the church after the recessional to the Adoration chapel, spending our first minutes as a married couple in front of the Blessed Sacrament. Our priest insisted we walk from the church to our car and drive down the chapel. We went back and forth on this, with me getting more and more frustrated, until I grudgingly gave in. When we emerged from the church, there was our car, covered in brightly colored post it notes spelling out I Do!

We take our coffee: (Joy): black. (Mary): I wish I could say I take it black like a hardcore adult, but the truth is, I need sugar and cream and lots of it.

Saving the Date

Wedding Planning, serving the Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin areas.

After years of planning collegiate athletic events and corporate conferences, Savanna Faulkner’s friends began seeking her expertise as they planned their wedding days. Before long, Savanna says, “I was planning strangers’ weddings.” She began pursuing wedding planning as a business, and Saving the Date transitioned from side hustle to full-time work in 2017.

A love for the Catholic faith infuses everything about Savanna’s client experience, both visually and behind the scenes. “Love is so beautiful,” says Savanna, “and easily the reason why I am so passionate about people. I love to make people feel seen, heard, and understood.” Inspired by the rich sacred art and sensory beauty of the Church and liturgy, she finds design inspiration in her faith and carries it into her couples’ weddings.

Favorite movies: Top Gun and 27 Dresses

Ministries I’m involved in: The pro-life movement is a huge part of my life. In fact, my parents became so convicted in their pro-life beliefs they adopted two foster kids! I enjoy volunteering my event-planning expertise to local non-profits for their fundraisers.

The best part of working on weddings: Being with people. I love working [hard], just to hear how happy the bride and groom are. Also, the gravity of involving me to be in charge of one of the biggest days of someone's life is incredible. I love that I can portray confidence and peace to the couples who decide to put their big day in my hands.

Fire and Gold Photography

Photography; serving Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Western New York. Available for nationwide travel.

Laura Schaefer fell in love with photography in high school and worked on developing her skills during college. Inspired and fortified by the image of gold being refined by fire, making God’s children “stronger and hopefully holier” after a miscarriage, Laura founded Fire and Gold Photography in 2017 and shoots weddings alongside her husband, Matthew.

A Franciscan University alumna and resident of Steubenville, Ohio, where the university is located, the Catholic faith permeates all of Fire and Gold’s work and relationships: “I am a Catholic photographer,” Laura says, “and those words are in that order for a reason. Catholic first; photographer second. My faith is my way of life and it informs every choice I make. [Matthew and I] both love the writings of St. Josemaria Escriva, and I would say that this quote captures how we view our work as photographers: ‘If you seek sanctity in and through your work, you will necessarily have to strive to turn it into personal prayer.’”

I take my coffee...Laura: I wish I could say black but let's be honest, I love creamer. Matthew:  Black.

We’re most inspired by: [how God] takes delight in the beauty of His creation. We love photography and running our business because it’s how we get to create and capture beauty. We see it as participation in God’s own creation of beauty. He is Beauty itself, and we honestly see my work as a form of prayer.

Love means: Sacrifice. To love as Christ loved. To give of yourself fully and completely, without reservation or strings attached.

It can sound like an academic answer, but we have learned to live this in our marriage and actually living it out takes it from the classroom to the real world. Loving in the good times and bad; loving until it hurts. Loving even when the other person isn't acting lovable. Calling each other on in holiness and becoming the best versions of ourselves. Loving our children and teaching them virtue. Pouring yourself out completely for your family yet always being filled through the grace of the sacrament.

Quiet Light Creations

Gifts; ships nationwide and internationally.

Angela Marinelli, a longtime jewelry and rosary maker, always prays while crafting religious items. One day while praying over a rosary she was creating, overwhelmed with a sense of “darkness in the world” that she’d been hearing on the news, Angela heard the whispers of a call to share her gifts in a fuller capacity. Quiet Light Creations, founded on a love for Our Lady and the Saints, offers handmade rosaries, chaplets, and bracelets that become instant heirlooms when chosen for a couple’s wedding day.

Angela still prays for the recipient of every item she creates, with a hope that through her work, the Catholic faith is shared in an authentic, simple way: “A quiet light is easily overlooked, but once it catches your eye and you pause for a minute to think, it makes you wonder. The quiet light of the tabernacle candle points to someone so much greater, just like the quiet light our Blessed Mother embodies points to someone so much greater.

“The simplicity draws you into the mystery of faith without the temptations of being known or being acknowledged for our good works. I hope that my shop will share the message that we are all striving saints, we are not perfect, and the trap of comparison even in holiness is not what we are meant for.”

I root for... the Pittsburgh Pirates, Penguins, Steelers and the Chicago Cubs, Blackhawks, Bears. Family loyalty!

Favorite music: James Taylor, The Head and The Heart, George Ezra, Matchbox Twenty, and Twenty One Pilots.

Love means: Trusting that another soul will return the love you give, so much so that the thoughts and worries about yourself being taken care of are cast far out of your mind. Love is choosing another continually and consistently, always showing your love for them more than saying it. Love means being attuned to all the little things they do for you and for everyone else, and doing those things for them.

A sure sign of love is feeling at peace and at rest. Authentic love casts out all anxiety and fear. To love means to offer that place of rest in yourself where others can dwell in peace.

FertilityCare

NFP and Fertility Education; offering in-person instruction in the Miami area and long-distance services nationwide.

Sarah McKeown was first introduced to the Creighton Fertility model during her engagement. As a nurse, she found herself particularly drawn to the medical science behind the method. Within several years, Sarah had discerned and answered a call to pursue NFP education more fully. She began accepting and teaching clients the Creighton FertilityCare Model in 2016.

Sarah’s call and conviction have only continued to grow as she’s served her clients; many, but not all, are Catholic, and she loves the opportunity to “[teach] people about the beauty of their fertility; the way God created women's bodies and how we are called to live our marital sexuality in a responsible and generous way...I think having NFP instructors available long distance helps fill a need for many couples who may not have access to someone in their city or don't know how to get started.” She describes her business as “marriage-centered, empowering, and insightful,” and says, “have felt more called to teach NFP than I have with any other job, including being a nurse.”

Favorite wedding day memory: The priest celebrating our mass was Fr. Mike Schmitz, who is amazing! At one point during his homily he said, "this couple doesn't know what the future holds, and they will have difficult times ahead, but even so, you look at the other person and say, you're worth it."

And at the same time Fr. Mike said those words, my husband looked at me with tears in his eyes and mouthed, "you're worth it". It was so beautiful; I don't know how he knew Fr. Mike was going to say that, but it was such an amazing, grace-filled moment.

On my bucket list: Have as many kids as God will give us, visit one of those resorts in the South Pacific where your little bungalow is on stilts over the water, and become a saint!

The best part of my work: I love to see women become confident in their ability to tell fertile vs. infertile days of their cycles. Couples feel so much more freedom to enter into marriage without the need or use of birth control. They can learn to love each other freely, totally, faithfully and fruitfully the way God intended.

Katie Michelle Design

Serves clients nationwide and international

Katie Ralls has always felt an inherent need to be creative. With a mind and heart always yearning for her next creative outlet, she finds inspiration everywhere she goes—from a breathtaking view in nature to a unique design in a restaurant. Calligraphy once began as a hobby, but quickly grew into a professional career. Now, she incorporates watercolor and digital design into her wedding lettering and design. “I love to be a part of a community that values the sacrament of marriage and inspires couples, while also helping brides and grooms create a beautiful day!”

What are three things on your bucket list?: Visiting Greece and Croatia, skydiving, and restoring a Historic Building

What are your favorite books, movies, and music?: Two of my favorite books are Present over Perfect and Big Magic. I generally read non-fiction but sometimes I like a good fiction book on a vacation. It seems like good movies are getting harder and harder to come by. I love watching old black and white classics, especially with Audrey Hepburn. I am always up for a good rom-com or an action/mystery movie. I listen to a little bit of anything and everything. Except death metal and super dirty rap.

Do you cheer for any professional sports teams?: Every spring I love cheering for my alma mater Oregon State University, in Beaver Baseball. And also watching our hometown hero Jacoby Ellsbury play for the Yankees.

31 Four Artisan Jewelry

Ships nationwide and international

Although husband and wife Angie and Jesse Ross come from a family of jewelers, their desire to create custom jewelry is the fruit of a Marian consecration. The symbolism, care and intention of their design and creation process yields one-of-a-kind pieces which not only capture the unique love between a bride and a groom, but also make visible the essence of God’s love and salvation. “Jewelry is used throughout scripture, including in Exodus 31:4 (our namesake) and we love creating one-of-a-kind pieces that tell the stories of our faith using precious metals and gemstones.”

What is your favorite memory of your wedding day?: After the ceremony (before all the rush of photos and the reception), we went over to a nearby lake. We looked at each other and just started laughing. It was such a crazy journey getting to the wedding (this was back in the day before Pinterest and we did everything ourselves armed only with a Martha Stewart wedding book!). We were so elated to be married but also couldn't believe it. After all the effort to create this perfect day, the only thing that mattered was that we were married.

What is your favorite place you have traveled?: Italy & Orkney Islands in Scotland

What does love mean?: Love is the purpose of life--it's why we were made, man and woman. Love means working for the good of the other.

Blithe and Blue Design

Washington, DC and surrounding areas

In an effort to make beautiful stationary, lettering, and design more affordable for brides and through her desire to work from home while caring for her two children, Emily Tate founded Blithe and Blue Design. Her initial mission has become the core of her professional inspiration and value. “I love being able to work with excited brides and grooms to help lessen the burden of planning a wedding. Working with young couples is a constant reminder of Christ's love, and of the love I have for my own husband!”

What are your favorite books, movies and music?: My favorite book is The Privilege of Being Woman by Alice von Hildebrand. My favorite novel is Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult. I love any music by Taylor Swift, and my favorite movie ever is Princess Diaries!

How do you take your coffee?: I'm not a coffee girl! Give me chocolate milk any day.

What is your favorite memory of your wedding day?: My favorite moment at my wedding (besides walking down the aisle to my husband...and my sobbing sisters!) was looking around at our reception and having every single person that I love in this world all in one room. I doubt I will ever get that feeling again, and it was definitely one of the greatest moments of my life!

I truly love what I do & none of this would be possible without Him.”

What is your favorite memory of your wedding day?: My favorite moment was seeing my husband for the first time while walking down the aisle. All the craziness of the day just melted away. Our Vendors for This Month:

Beauty of the Soul Studio

Northern Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC

Emily Ott’s passion for photography began as a curiosity, grew as a side hustle, and developed into the full-time vocation. She desires to uphold the value and sanctity of marriage in her marriage, her profession, and her relationships with clients. “After a few years working under another photographer, I decided to officially launch my own business in order to cater more specifically to the couples in my area searching for someone who appreciates the true value of their wedding day beyond portolio-building moments, and knows what it's like to be on the other side of the wedding day.”

What is your favorite place where you have traveled?: My honeymoon was an incredible 9 day trip to Italy. The first half of our trip was to Rome, which was incredible enough with all of the Church history, beautiful landmarks, and even participating in the "Sposi Novelli" newlywed blessing at the Wednesday papal audience. But my favorite place was the second half of our trip, to the tiny island off the coast of Naples called Ischia. We stayed in a medieval castle, functioning as part tourist attraction (with restored rooms, chapels, and gardens) and part hotel in the renovated section that had previously been a monastery. We had a room with an incredible view, never had a bad meal, and enjoyed the warm Mediterranean air!

What are your favorite saints or devotions?: My husband and I chose St. Michael the Archangel as a patron of our relationship while we were dating, and have continued a devotion to him into our marriage. I'm particularly fond of the Divine Mercy Chaplet as well—it was an integral part of my prayer life particularly during my dating years in college. I also owe much of my spiritual conversion to Eucharistic Adoration and try to go as often as I can.

What is your favorite food?: I'm a sucker for pizza. I'm particularly a fan of authentic Italian pizza (three trips to Italy in the last three years will spoil you like that) with its soft, dusty crust and authentic tomato flavor... but I'll also take a slice of hot delivery pizza. And yes, I am #TeamPineapple - no shame here!

Lauren Emily Photography

Virginia Beach and Norfolk, Virginia

Lauren Noa and her husband frequently relocate due to their commitment with the Navy. Despite new homes and communities, Lauren’s faith, love, and vocation to wedding photography remain the same. “My faith fuels my love of art and beauty, my family inspires my work ethic and encourages my business adventures, and my husband is my biggest support system and shows me the love and joy that helps to breathe life into my photography. I really do believe that photography can be a form of service and an opportunity to show Christ's love and peace to families and couples especially on their wedding day.”

What is your favorite moment of your wedding day?: My absolute favorite moment of the day was walking down the aisle and locking eyes with my husband-to-be. I thought my heart was going to fly out of me. There really isn't a better feeling! We had been dating for over six years by the time he had graduated and we were legally allowed to marry, so we got married just a few days after. Those were some of the longest few days! My second favorite was standing in front of our parish's statue of Mary while my sister and best friend sand the Ave Maria. That was the only time I cried that whole day!

What are your favorite books, movies, and music?: The Lord of the Rings definitely is at the top of the list, for both books and movies. But I have too many favorites to mention! For music, I love most anything acapella, some country, and I am really falling in love with Broadway Musicals...currently Bandstand is a favorite.

What are three things on your bucket list?: I would love to travel to every state to photograph a wedding. I want to have at least four happy, healthy, and faithful kids. I want to travel Europe to photograph all the pretty people at all of the historical things and take part in at least one pilgrimage (probably to Lourdes) while I was there.

Wild Grace Therapy

Miami, Florida or Serving Clients Nationwide through Online Virtual Sessions

Marriage and family therapist Melissa Tablada prioritizes her faith first, followed by family. Her personal priorities influence her professional philosophy. “Theology of the Body is a huge inspiration for my work, as well as the married saints such as St. Anne & St. Joachim, Mary & St. Joseph, St. Zélie & St. Louis. My faith plays a role in my business because my faith is the foundation of everything in my life. The way that I can best serve my clients is when we bring faith into the therapy room and allow the Holy Spirit to be present and active our sessions. God leads all of my life, my work is absolutely included in that.” The intersection between faith and professional therapy is where Melissa serves the world and strengthens marriages, the foundation of society.

Do you root for any professional sports teams?: Miami Heat & Miami Dolphins because I married a Miami man who loves his teams.

What ministries are you involved with?: I am involved in Fiat Marriage Community, Respect Life, Gesu Couples Group, Better with Betsy, St. Augustine Young Adult Group, and I serve as a Eucharistic Minister

What does love mean to you?: Love means that we desire the absolute good for the other person. We can love more fully by seeing the way God does, serving those around us, and choosing to love even on the days we don't really feel like it.

Kirsten Ann Photography

Madison, Wisconsin

Kirsten Gord refined her photography skills into a full-time business in order to serve her family as a stay-at-home wife and mother. “Everything I believe about the human person, the dignity of life, the relationships between man and woman, the role of husband and wife, and the importance of families is rooted in my Catholic faith. Therefore, the way I treat others, the way I view beauty, and the way I present my work are all framed by these Catholic understandings.” Kirsten’s value for beautiful photography and the depth of her spiritual life form her mission as a Catholic wedding photographer.

What are three things on your bucket list?: Hike around the Norwegian fjords with my husband. (I got to do this once after graduating college, but I really want to have this experience with him!) Make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The Camino de Santiago and/or visit the homeland of one of my favorite saints (Lisieux, Poland, etc.).

What is your favorite memory of your wedding day?: Wow, this is hard. If I had to be more specific, I would say making our vows was my favorite, for two reasons. One, because it was the moment when we entered into a covenant with each other before God, promising to love one another faithfully for all our days. Two, because Joe could barely get through it! He is a mega-crier, so he was sobbing through all the vows. It was so sweet!

What ministries are you involved with?: Currently, I am mostly involved in local Catholic mom's groups. However, while I was in college, I was very involved in the campus ministry at St. Thomas Aquinas (at Purdue University - "Boiler Catholics"). I attended, then staffed, then co-chaired a staff for the Boiler Awakening Retreat. I also co-founded and led the Catholic Women's Group, which is still going strong on campus today!

Zélie Veils

Bridal Attire; Fowler, Michigan, ships nationwide

Rebekah Shannon crafted her own wedding veil and loved the process. Two years later, with her husband’s encouragement and under the patronage of St. Zélie Martin--herself a lacemaker and businesswoman--Rebekah made her gifts official and founded her business, offering custom and ready-to-wear bridal veils. She intercedes in prayer for each of her clients and experiences great joy in seeing her work “worn on the biggest day of someone's life. Especially at such a pinnacle moment, like the first look or the vows. It's a part of that memory for them forever.”

Rebekah’s spirit of good will extends beyond her brides: “My Catholic faith,” she says, “was the drive to partner with an organization that offered a helping hand to the most vulnerable. We were very intentional with our decision to choose human trafficking as the issue we'd address.” A portion of each Zélie Veils sale is donated to the global NGO Love Justice, dedicated to pursuing human dignity and freedom with practical and political support.

Favorite movie: A Quiet Place

Favorite devotions: Other than the Martin family [the family of Saint Zélie and her husband Louis, the parents of Saint Thérese], I've always had a strong devotion to the Sacred Heart, especially in striving to understand the depth of Christ's love for us.

The best place I’ve traveled: Rome in 2016. My husband and I met Pope Francis and he blessed my first baby while in the womb!

Our Lady’s Armory

Gifts; Cincinnatti, Ohio, ships worldwide

When Nick Jobe proposed to his bride, Elizabeth, he gave her the gift of a handmade Rosary. He discovered a love for the craft of creating precious sacramental items, along with a market need for quality religious items with a masculine sensibility. Our Lady’s Armory was founded in 2015, offering rosaries made from paracord or precious gems, religious jewelry, and cufflinks. Custom options are available, offering a unique opportunity to gift accessories with the significance of a favorite saint from groom to groomsmen or bride to groom.

True to the name of his business, Nick has dedicated his work to Mary, our mother. Inspired by Saint Maximilian Kolbe’s Militia Immaculata, he says, “[I see the Militia as] something to which all the faithful are called, especially Catholic men. I see my role as the "Quartermaster" of Our Lady's Armory, which means I help outfit soldiers for their spiritual service to Our Lady.”

Favorite part of working on weddings: My favorite part of [creating custom rosaries and cufflinks for wedding parties] is the deep level of personalization that each customer seeks for the finished product. Most of my regular customers are happy to pick a product straight out of my catalog, but all of my wedding customers have found ways to incorporate their favorite saints or particular devotions, either by special patron saint medals on their rosaries or by unique cufflinks that aren't offered in my standard catalog.

Ministries I’m involved in: Knights of Columbus, Swole.Catholic

Love means: willing the good of the beloved.

Mackenzie Reiter Photography

Photography; Houston, Texas, serving Houston, Austin, Dallas, Texas, New York, California, and available for worldwide travel.

Mackenzie says, “Ever since I can remember I have always been the ‘friend with the camera.’ I purchased my first digital Kodak camera in the fourth grade! As the years have passed, my experience with photography has grown tremendously and turned from a hobby into a career. I love documenting weddings because there is something so unbelievably special in having a front row seat on someone's wedding day.”

A recent bride herself, Mackenzie desired to find fellow Catholic vendors for her own wedding, recognizing the ways in which they understood her priorities and needs. Now, behind the camera, shooting weddings on a combination of film and digital, she loves the opportunity to intercede for and share in the particular joys of Catholic marriage with each of her couples: “with my own personal experience I can truly capture and beautifully represent the sacredness of a full Nuptial Mass Ceremony.”

On my bucket list: To leave the world better than before I left it, to travel the world with my husband, Chisam--I love traveling to places off the beaten path--and to photograph a Catholic wedding in a different country!

I take my coffee: extra sweet!

Favorite saint: Thérese of Lisieux
